N-POWER to create 600,000 jobs for Nigerian youths




It is a known fact that Youth unemployment is one of the major challenges that Nigeria is facing and has been on the increase over the years with repeated cycles of poor leadership at every  single level. 

Npower is a programme designed by the Federal Government Of Nigeria under the current administration to tackle youth unemployment in the country. It is aimed at reducing youth unemployment to the lowest acceptable level.

Npower is for all young Nigerians who are not employed or not gainfully employed both graduates and non graduates. It is designed to provide the participants with all the necessary skills, tools and livelihood that will transform them from job seekers to employers of labour. They will not only gain employment but also some entrepreneurship and innovations.

The Npower programme is divided into phases with N-power 2016 being the first phase.This phase is targeting areas of the Nigerian economy with critical need namely: education, agriculture, technology, creative, construction and artisanal industries. N-Power is also meant to prepare the participants to be key players on the global stage as they can export both their skills or products.

The programme is supported by both government and the private sector and funded under the social investment programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria. At the end of the Npower programme, the participants will be given the certificate of National Skills Qualification (NSQ).

Job Categories Under N-power. 

N-power 2016 which is the first phase and is meant to create at least 600,000 jobs and it is divided into 3 major categories as follow:
  1. N-Power Teacher Corps Programmes (500,000 Graduate jobs)
  2. N-Power Knowledge Programmes (25,000 non-graduate jobs)
  3. N-Power Build (75,000 non-graduate jobs)
We are going to have a brief discussion on what the 3 categories of N-power is all about and the criteria for one to apply.

1.  N-Power Teacher Corps Programmes 

The N-Power Teacher Corps is designed to engage and train 500,000 unemployed young Nigerian  graduates. It is a paid job but it is not a permanent employment. It is a volunteering programme of a 2 year duration 

The participants under the N-Power Teacher Corps programmes will get computing devices that will contain information necessary for their specific engagement, as well as information for their continuous training and development. All the participants under this category will provide teaching, instructional, and advisory solutions in 4 key areas of the economy namely: Teaching, Agriculture, Health and Community Education (ie N-power Agro, N-Power Health, N-Power Teach and N-Power Community Education respectively)


REQUIREMENTS OR CRITERIA FOR APPLICATION FOR N-POWER TEACHER CORPS PROGRAMMES

To apply for the N-Power Teacher  Corps, the following requirements must be met:
  • Currently Unemployed
  • Must be a graduate (minimum of HND/BSc in any field from any higher institution)
  • Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps Programme
  • Aged between 18-35
  • Apart from the above 4 criteria, you are also required to have an interest in the particular sub unit of your choice which I think you do anyway.

2. N-Power Knowledge Programmes

The  N-Power Knowledge programme is the Federal Government’s first step towards diversifying to a knowledge economy. This programme will work alongside the planned eight innovation hubs across the country to provide incubation and acceleration of the technology and creative industries. 
 
The programme is a ‘Training to Jobs’ initiative, essentially ensuring that participants can get engaged in the marketplace in an outsourcing capacity, as freelancers, as employees as and also as entrepreneurs.  It targets employment for 25,000 Nigerian youths.
 
All the Npower power participants under this category will be trained under 3 sub groups or sub categories as follows: Npower Creative, N-Power Tech Hardware and N-Power Tech Software respectively.

REQUIREMENTS OR CRITERIA FOR YOU TO APPLY FOR N-POWER KNOWLEDGE PROGRAMMES

For you to apply for N-Power knowledge, you must meet the requirements listed below:

  • Unemployed graduates or non graduates
  • Must be between 18-35 years old
  • Problem solving skills
  • For Script Writing, creative writing skills and analytical writing skills will be an advantage
  • Ability to undertake self-tutorship
  • Detail-oriented
  • Analytical

3. N-Power Build Programmes

This programme is aimed at creating jobs for 75,000 young Nigerians, whether you are a graduate or not. N-Power Build is an accelerated training and certification (Skills to Job) programme. It is aimed at turning the participants into skilled and highly competent workforce of technicians, artisans and service professionals. The focus industries here includes: Building Services, Construction, Built Environment Services, Utilities, Automotive, Aluminium and Gas.


REQUIREMENTS FOR YOU TO APPLY FOR N-POWER BUILD PROGRAMMES

The criteria for you to apply for N-Power Build includes:
  • Currently Unemployed
  • No degree or diploma requirements
  • Aged between 18-35
  • Interest in fixing, building and creating things
